'Homo sum..' I am human

"Homo sum, humani nihil a me alienum puto", a famous quote by Roman play writer Publius Terentius (195/185 – c. 159? BC), a man of Berber descend. The phrase is translated as: "I am human, and I think that nothing which is human is alien to me". The phrase appeared in his play Heaton Timorumenos and I love it, as it states the embracing of all forms and expressions of human being. Terentius Lucanus, a Roman senator, brought Terence to Rome as a slave, educated him and later on, impressed by his abilities, freed him. Terence apparently died young, probably in Greece or on his way back to Rome. All of the six plays Terence wrote have survived.

This little history is one of many hopeful examples where human connection an potential was acknowledged on a level that passed beyond the separation of culture, origin or social class. Once you get past the differences, you start seeing the similarities.. Something the world was reminded of by this Danish channel today. What a beautiful message.
